Introduction by Orem City

801-368-8331 | mattmckellcpa@gmail.com

Orem is home. My wife Sherri and I raised our five children here. All five attended Orem Elementary, Orem Junior, and Mountain View High School, and four of them have chosen to build their families and businesses right here in Orem.

With over 30 years of experience as a CPA in Orem, I have assisted individuals and business owners in navigating tax complexities and helping manage their companies and family budgets effectively. Moreover, I have audited County and City Governments in Utah, ensuring fiscal responsibility and accountability.

As your city council member, I’ll bring my experience and your voice as I strive to serve you.

Protecting our neighborhoods through responsible development remains essential to preserving Orem’s reputation as a top family destination.

Beyond my professional endeavors, my coaching passion led me to coach tennis at Mountain View High School for 12 years, contributing to two State Championships. Helping develop the next generation of leaders in our community brings me immense joy.

I hope to earn your support to bring my diverse expertise as a CPA, Certified Residential Appraiser, and devoted Father/Coach to serving you and Orem. Let’s continue making it an exceptional place to live, work, and thrive together.

Candidate's Vision for Orem (for the next 10 years)

"Continue Supporting our Police and First Responders by holding up the rule of law.  It's important that they know we have their backs.

Continue to maintain and manage our parks and roads and city projects to keep the City of Orem beautiful and inviting to our families.

Continue to be fiscally responsible in our spending to keep our taxes down and our budgets lean and intentional.

Continue to have responsible development to deal with the growth that is going to continue to come to Orem."

What do Orem Voters say about this Candidate?

We surveyed hundreds of Orem voters who attended cottage meetings, watched video interviews, or met with candidates and asked them questions. We asked "What are your impressions of (candidate name) (positive and/or negative). Would you vote for him/her? Why or why not?

Here are voter responses:

  • I would vote for him (Anon)
  • Very smart and analytical guy, good conservative and I plan to vote for him. (Anon)
  • Solid business man who cares passionately about the city. I think I'd vote for him, even though he is more right than I am. He is endorsed by many friends who know him well. (M.Low)
  • Positive. Yes I will. He is right on.(Anon)
  • I listened to Matt speak at a cottage meeting, but did not have the opportunity to discuss anything with him afterward. He disappeared quickly that evening. It was raining, so perhaps that was a factor.  I see him as BUSINESS. He understands the economic issues that face us, and a couple of his answers were very 'matter of fact'. I liked what I heard, but feel like I'd like to learn more about the man. A savvy businessman can be a good resource for the city, or can be someone who only looks out for himself and those in his circle. I'm impressed--to a point, and might vote for him. I hope to attend another meeting and get to know him better. (Bob Muench)
  • I will vote for him. He is who Orem needs. (D.G.)
  • Matt seems introverted and sometime unsure of his answers. But I believe he will be an asset to stop more high density housing. I will be voting for him. (S.W.)
  • I feel like I would need to learn more about Matt before considering him as a candidate I would vote for. I would like to learn about specific issues including working with ASD, transportation/traffic, community development, etc. (James Eagar)
  • Not my favorite. Seems cocky. (Anon)
  • Not sure yet about my vote for Matt.  I want to like him and I have shaken his hand, but I haven’t yet seen his SFO video here. (D.)
  • I LOVE that he understands the proper role of government. That is a litmus test point for me. He is very unschooled in politics but I think he can be trained given his understanding of government is not your friend. I will be voting for him.(Anon)
  • I agree with him that government should be limited and that Orem City should remain a place for families. (Anon)
  • no opinion yet (Anon)
  • Yes (Anon)
  • Matt has been interesting to get to know through these meetings and videos. He carries himself very well with confidence, but without arrogance. I like his background in finance, government finance, audits and appraisals. I have asked him where he stands on pertinent issues and find myself very aligned to his same values. He seems very straight forward without being too wordy and very trustworthy. I would vote for Matt.(Anon)
  • Matt brings auditor, accountant, and appraiser skills to the table. He is strongly opposed to high rise apartments as a threat to Family City, supports the Mayor and City Council direction, and would use common sense in approaching issues. He stubbornly refuses to be told what to say and when to say it, which I believe reflects a character strength that will serve well in these times. I would vote for him 3rd. (David Busath)
  • Would vote for him (Anon)
  • Yes.  Number one choice.  Excellent skills and my ideas for how Orem should grow.  (J.H.)
  • I really like Matt. He is approachable and down to earth. Funny and sincere. I would absolutely vote for Matt. (S.R.W.)
  • Positive. I would vote for him. His states his opinions on the issues facing Orem and I am confident that he would vote the way my values lie.(Anon)
  • Very well informed. And, he apparently lives in my side of town! (Anon)
  • My impression so far is very positive and I support him. Matt is a very engaging, personable individual and seems to be a calming influence during the debates.  I feel he has skills as a CPA, auditor and appraiser that would help him serve the people of Orem as a councilman. He is a proponent of responsible growth. I also like the fact that he favors smaller, transparent government wherever possible. (Anon)
  • I like Matt but his answers leave me with more questions.  (G.C.D.)
  • Positive, I will definitely consider voting for him.(Anon)
  • Yes, I would vote for him. His answers and views also reflected my views.(Anon)
  • If he does what he said,  it would be good.  Yes I am going to vote for him (J. Carmen)
  • Matt is very likable and humble. I think his expertise in accounting, and auditing would be a great addition to our city council. He isn't a politician and that's what I like about him. He gives straight forward answers. He's in my top 3 or 4 candidates right now. Would like more chances to hear him speak. (Anon)
  • Very impressed with his knowledge and proper role if government (Anon)
  • Yes, I like Matt's business background and his stance against making Orem the 'housing hub' of Utah Co.  He's fully invested in Orem and will help keep Orem Family City USA (Anon)
