Introduction by Orem City

801-787-4306 | jeff4orem@gmail.com

I am a proud, lifelong resident of Orem – this is where I grew up, went to school, and met my beautiful wife, Darla. We are both Orem Tigers! Orem has been the nurturing ground for our six children and twelve grandchildren. It’s a place close to my heart, and I have always been actively invested in the community. My commitment to Orem runs deep. Volunteering as a baseball, soccer, and basketball coach, leadership roles in the Boy Scouts of America, as well as significant leadership roles in other charitable organizations, I have always sought to make a positive impact. My experience as President and CEO of a local business gave me firsthand knowledge of challenges faced by small business owners.

I will continue to:

  1. Listen to the citizens. As a concerned and thoughtful council member, I have truly listened to and represented the citizens.
  2. Protect  our neighborhoods. Growth is always a concern. The key is how we manage  that growth. A slow, thoughtful, methodical approach… Smart, reasonable  development where it makes sense and directing it away from areas where  it does not.
  3. Support First Responders and city employees.
  4. Collaborate and work with other community partners.

Candidate's Vision for Orem (for the next 10 years)

"As a current member of the Orem city Council, I think we are generally going in the right direction. The survey that just came back from the Orem city employees with an overwhelming response that they feel like Orem is going in the right direction says a lot. I would like to see the CARE Tax renewed for another 10 years. The blessing that this is to the Cultural Arts and Recreation programs in our city will be a steady improvement in those areas over the next 10 years.

Of course, city infrastructure updates and improvement, will be a continual work in progress. One area that we will be working on as a council is the beautification of State Street. Along with that, I would like to see more businesses come to that part of Orem. I would like to see more opportunities for affordable housing. Responsible growth will continue to be very important in the next 10 years and beyond. The key is how we manage that growth. A slow, thoughtful, and methodical approach. Smart,  reasonable development where it makes sense and directing it away from where it does not. It is important that we continue to work to protect our neighborhoods."

What do Orem Voters say about this Candidate?

We surveyed hundreds of Orem voters who attended cottage meetings, watched video interviews, or met with candidates and asked them questions. We asked "What are your impressions of (candidate name) (positive and/or negative). Would you vote for him/her? Why or why not?

Here are voter responses:

  • Very charismatic and involved. I would vote for him (Anon)
  • Very nice guy, I’ve learned if he is re elected I need to speak up to him often because he claims to listen to his constituents, don’t think I’ll vote for him though.  (Anon)
  • Jeff listens to citizens and tries to vote what he thinks they want. It is hard for me to understand what he stands for though. And he is backed by development funds and ideology. It's hard to rely on that. (M.Low)
  • Negative. No, he doesn't have a backbone or principles or vision for Orem's future. He just repeats that he will listen to citizens. But his record shows "which" citizens he listens to , and I don't believe it is the majority or what's best for Orem. (Anon)
  • I have not been able to attend any meetings with Jeff yet. I did reach out to him, and he stated that he would be happy to come to me or talk on the phone. At the moment I know nothing about him other than what I have heard from others. It has leaned more against what I stand for, but I want to learn for myself, so I will keep an open mind for now, but I won't vote for someone that I don't know much about. (Bob Muench)
  • I won't vote for him if he remains attached at the hip to Tom McDonald. (D.G.)
  • Nice guy. Too much of a squish. Don't trust that he won't vote for whatever Tom McDonald tells him to. Won't vote for him. (S.W.)
  • I have had extended conversation with Jeff. I do not agree with him on many issues, but I respect his willingness to listen to different perspectives. I would consider him a top candidate for me. (James Eagar)
  • Could be swayed. Not a favorite.  (Anon)
  • Jeff will not get my vote. He knows how to package himself on the campaign, BUT the people in my community who support him, I know to be democrats and socialistic leaning.  I think he will be bad for the kind of Orem we currently enjoy and embrace. (D.)
  • Jeff has a record that can be checked. I know what I am getting with Jeff — Tom Macdonald lite. On the issues of most importance it appears that he side with Tom. Does Tom influence him? I think so. Jeff is not a strong leader. He says “I am NOT for high density housing” but I don’t actually trust that statement, like would he “word salad” his vote in favor of high density project all the while believing he is not for high density. He isn’t a strong leader. Orem needs strength. There has to be pushback from state overreach.  (Anon)
  • I have spoken with Jeff in the past and sent invitations to see another side of an issue for the city council last year, where he declined. If I remember correctly, he did not vote for Orem citizens to have the opportunity to have a choice to go to ballot last year. That was enough for me to not want to vote for him again.
  • Jeff has a solid track record of supporting Family City USA as a City Councilor and is very careful to attend to all points of view. He is a good city councilor, but doesn't stand out as a leader at this crucial nexus in time when we face being pressured to give up our family style by growth demands from the State and from developers. I would vote for him 9th. (David Busath)
  • Would vote for him  (Anon)
  • Though Jeff is nice, I do not find him honest. I cannot vote for Jeff. (S.R.W.)
  • Negative. I wouldn't vote for him because he is not clear on how he stands for the issues facing Orem. I have observed him on the current city council and have seen how he allows other fellow council members to talk him into voting a certain way. He doesn't have a backbone nor does he stand on his own two feet. (Anon)
  • I was disappointed that he voted last year to deny the residents of Orem the opportunity and right to decide if they wanted their own school district. For this reason, I would not vote for him. (Anon)
  • Jeff is a very personable and likable individual.  I cannot support him because I have watched him over the past two years on the City Council, and I am not convinced he is his own man.  He is not an independent thinker, and seems to march lock-step with Tom MacDonald on nearly every issue. I would also not vote for him because he was selected and endorsed by the Stronger Orem, PAC, a group that is led by an individual that is connected at the hip to the web of state politics through the governor's office, supports growth, big business , high rise housing and UTA (mass transit). That pretty much tells me how Jeff will vote on the critical issues facing Orem. (Anon)
  • Jeff is the incumbent and very knowledgeable on topics.  He is hard to pin down on specific solutions. (G.C.D.)
  • Very negative, I had high hopes for Jeff four years ago, but he appears to have abandoned the platform he ran on. (Anon)
  • Yes, I would vote for him. I liked his answers, they reflected my views.  (Anon)
  • Only one who responded to my letter. I need to know more about his views. (J. Carmen)
  • Jeff is likable and caring. I can't vote for him because his answers are too politically evasive. I need a candidate that I know their own views and desires for the city - not one who says they will listen to what the residents want, but then might only be hearing the squeaky wheels rather than the quiet voters.  (Anon)
  • Not too impressed. He was also on the flyer with Gale and Killpack  (Anon)
  • No, Jeff is a nice person but he voted to deny residents the right to vote on the School District issue and that same night volunteered/wanted to put his signature on the positive recommendation in the voter information pamphlet.  He couldn't seem to make up his mind. Whether one supported the idea or not, it was an important enough of an issue for the residents to vet and learn about, he should have voted to put it on the ballot. (Anon)
